Sephardic Jews came to Kochi (Cochin), India, almost directly after their expulsion from Spain.
Over the ensuing years, others came to India’s port cities – Mumbai (Bombay), Kolkata (Calcutta) and Chennai (Madras), among others – where they built communities and flourished commercially and culturally.
When the British left India, most of these Jews followed them to English-speaking lands, or moved to Israel.
